October 12, 2025: Honoring Community: Our Deepest Thanks to Frisco Lakes
Although I wasn’t able to attend the recent performance of Undesirable Secrets in Frisco Lakes, my heart was very much there. This community has been part of our journey from the beginning—hosting one of the first performances of the play that shares my father’s powerful story. To see it return for a special encore, just weeks before its Off-Broadway debut, is deeply meaningful for our family and for the Foundation.
On behalf of the Anthony Acevedo Educational Foundation, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone in the Frisco Lakes community who attended and supported this performance. September 26, 2025: Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month Through My Father's Story
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I am reminded once again of the importance of telling our stories—stories that too often have been overlooked, silenced, or forgotten. One of those stories is that of my father, Anthony C. Acevedo.
My father was a U.S. Army medic during World War II and the first Mexican American to be officially recognized as a Holocaust survivor by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Captured during the Battle of the Bulge, he and hundreds of other American soldiers were forced into the Nazi slave labor camp at Berga. For decades, he carried the weight of those experiences in silence—ordered by the U.S. Army not to speak of what he endured.
But his story is not his alone. Nearly half a million Latinos served during World War II. They fought bravely across Europe and the Pacific, while also enduring discrimination at home. Their service reminds us that the fight for freedom abroad was deeply connected to the struggle for dignity and equality here in the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month offers us an opportunity not only to celebrate culture, but also to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us.
This year, Anthony’s story is being shared through Undesirable Secrets, a powerful solo play written and performed by Rodolfo Alvarado. Fresh from a successful run in New York City, the play is now traveling to communities across the country before its Off-Broadway premiere in November. Each performance keeps Anthony’s voice alive and ensures that Hispanic veterans and their legacy are not forgotten.

August 27, 2025: Grateful for the Extraordinary Reception of Undesirable Secrets in New York

Although I was unable to attend the opening of Undesirable Secrets in New York City due to prior commitments, I am deeply moved and grateful for the response the play has received at Theatre for the New City.
The first two performances have been met with standing ovations and even described as worthy of Broadway. Hearing this fills me with pride and gratitude — both for my father’s story being honored so powerfully and for the incredible dedication and artistry of Rodolfo Alvarado, who has poured his heart into bringing this work to life. July 23, 2025: Danisarte Joins Us in Honoring My Father’s Legacy
Every time I speak about my father, Anthony C. Acevedo, I feel both the weight and the gift of his story. A son of Mexican immigrants. A medic in WWII. A prisoner of war sent to Berga, a Nazi slave labor camp. And for 63 years—under military order—he kept all of it inside. Until the silence became unbearable. Until he chose, bravely, to speak not for himself, but for the men who never made it home.
Telling his story is now my life’s work—and I’m constantly humbled by those who choose to walk this path with us.
Recently, that path led us to Alicia Kaplan and her incredible company, Danisarte.
While I wasn’t able to attend, I remember Rodolfo sharing with me how powerful it was to read from his collection Brown Son of Lorca: A Boy Reclaimed in Poems, Stories & Voice at Danisarte’s Deconstructing Lorca event in New York. Alicia hosted the event and immediately connected with both the work and with Rodolfo himself. She understood Undesirable Secrets not just as a play, but as a necessary act of remembrance and resistance.
Not long after, I had the pleasure of meeting Alicia virtually over Zoom—and even in that short exchange, I could feel her deep commitment to storytelling that uplifts, challenges, and honors. Her decision to join our NYC production of Undesirable Secrets as co-producer is both a gift and a tremendous affirmation of the work we’re doing.
Founded in 1992, Danisarte is a 501(c)(3) bilingual theatre company known for developing original works that increase understanding among people of many cultures and nations. Their mission is rooted in advocacy, artistic excellence, and equity. Alicia herself is the recipient of the prestigious Premio ACE Award from the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York—and it’s easy to see why.
Danisarte’s presence in our upcoming NYC performances—at Theatre for the New City (August 24–31) and Off-Broadway at United Solo (November 1)—ensures that this story reaches audiences with the depth, dignity, and power it deserves.

July 10, 2025: From Berga to Broadway: Honoring My Father’s Legacy in NYC
In the play, my father (Rodolfo Alvarado) holds up his diary. Proof that Berga and the Death March were real.
As I write this, I am filled with both pride and deep emotion.
What began as a promise to keep my father’s story alive—a story long silenced by government secrecy and personal pain—has now taken center stage in New York City. Undesirable Secrets, the powerful solo play based on my father’s life, has been invited to New York for an extended run this August as part of Theatre for the New City’s Dream Up Festival. It will then make its official Off-Broadway debut at Theatre Row on November 1 as part of the United Solo Festival.
These milestones are more than just exciting news—they are validation of something we’ve always known: that my father, Anthony Acevedo, and the 350 American soldiers sent to Berga during World War II deserve to be remembered. Their experiences matter. Their pain, their courage, and their voices must not be lost to time.
Watching Undesirable Secrets come to life onstage—beautifully written and performed by Dr. Rodolfo Alvarado—has been a deeply personal journey. Audiences leave shaken, tearful, and moved. Many are hearing my father’s story for the first time. Others see themselves or their families reflected in the trauma he endured—not just during the war, but as a child at the hands of his own father. The play is raw, honest, and emotionally true.
After one early performance, a local educator wrote that the show was “worthy of Broadway.” It turns out Broadway was listening.
We are honored to bring this story to New York City audiences not once, but twice. These upcoming performances are not just theater—they are acts of resistance and remembrance. And they are part of a broader mission: to educate, to honor, and to ensure that the history of Latino soldiers during the Holocaust is no longer overlooked.

April 28, 2025: Celebrating a Well-Deserved Honor for Dr. Rodolfo Alvarado

We are thrilled to share some exciting news: Dr. Rodolfo Alvarado, the writer and performer of Undesirable Secrets, has been invited to New York City to present his poetry at a special event honoring the life and legacy of Federico García Lorca. The reading will take place on June 9 at La Nacional, a historic cultural center in the heart of Manhattan.
This invitation is not only a testament to Rodolfo’s extraordinary talents as a writer and performer but also a well-deserved moment of recognition during what has been a time of intense and inspiring work. In the midst of ongoing rehearsals for Undesirable Secrets and preparations to present the show nationally, this opportunity offers a welcome break—and a reminder of the many ways his voice is reaching and moving new audiences. We are also excited to announce that Rodolfo’s forthcoming book, Brown Son of Lorca, a collection of poems, a performance piece, and short stories, will be released on June 9 in honor of the New York reading. The collection is deeply inspired by the influence of Federico García Lorca on Rodolfo’s life and work, and stands as a heartfelt tribute to his mother and his upbringing in Lubbock, Texas. My husband Peter and I recently had the incredible honor of attending two performances of Undesirable Secrets in Lubbock, Texas—first at the Civic Center as part of the Viva Aztlán Festival and then at the Firehouse Theatre inside the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts. It is difficult to express the full weight of emotion we experienced watching the story of my father, Anthony Acevedo, brought to life with such depth, care, and humanity.
To see Rodolfo Alvarado step onto that stage and channel my father’s spirit—his courage, his trauma, and ultimately his resilience—was overwhelming. There were moments where I found myself wiping tears away, and I wasn’t alone. The silence in the audience spoke volumes. You could feel how deeply this story was landing, how the pain and bravery of those forgotten soldiers reached every person in the room.
I want to thank the people of Lubbock for your warm welcome, for showing up, and for listening with open hearts. I also want to extend our deepest gratitude to Zenaida Aguero and the Viva Aztlán Festival for including the play in this year’s event. It was a beautiful blend of art, culture, and remembrance.

I am beyond honored to share some exciting news—the Anthony Acevedo Educational Foundation is bringing Undesirable Secrets to Lubbock, Texas!
This incredible one-person drama, written and performed by Rodolfo Alvarado, tells the true story of my father, Anthony Acevedo—a WWII combat medic, former POW, and the first Mexican American registered as a Holocaust survivor.
We’ll be presenting two special performances in Lubbock:

A Story That Must Be Told
Many people don’t realize that my father and his fellow soldiers were ordered by the U.S. Army to keep their captivity at Berga a secret. For over 63 years, he carried that silence—until he finally broke it, donating his wartime diary to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. That diary was the first ever written by an American held in a Nazi concentration camp to be archived at the museum.
Through Rodolfo’s performance, my father’s story lives on—not just as a history lesson, but as an emotional journey of survival, resilience, and truth.

Lubbock holds a special place in this journey—not just because of the 80th Anniversary of the end of WWII, but because it’s Rodolfo’s hometown. It’s where his love of storytelling began, and now, it’s where he gets to share this deeply personal and historical narrative with the community.

This incredible one-person drama, written and performed by Rodolfo Alvarado, tells the true story of my father, Anthony Acevedo—a WWII combat medic, former POW, and the first Mexican American registered as a Holocaust survivor.
We’ll be presenting two special performances in Lubbock:

A Story That Must Be Told
Many people don’t realize that my father and his fellow soldiers were ordered by the U.S. Army to keep their captivity at Berga a secret. For over 63 years, he carried that silence—until he finally broke it, donating his wartime diary to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. That diary was the first ever written by an American held in a Nazi concentration camp to be archived at the museum.
Through Rodolfo’s performance, my father’s story lives on—not just as a history lesson, but as an emotional journey of survival, resilience, and truth.

Written and performed by Lubbock native Rodolfo Alvarado, Undesirable Secrets brings to life the incredible yet often overlooked story of Anthony Acevedo—a WWII combat medic, former POW, and the first Mexican American registered as a Holocaust survivor. Through this compelling one-person drama, audiences experience my father’s harrowing journey of survival, his resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering, and his lifelong battle with PTSD and the trauma of an abusive father.
This play is more than a historical account—it is a testament to the power of remembrance, justice, and healing. By sharing my father’s story, Undesirable Secrets ensures that his voice, along with the voices of the Forgotten Soldiers of Berga, is never lost to history.

As we approach the holiday season, I extend my warmest wishes to each of you and your loved ones. May this time be filled with joy, reflection, and peace. It is in this spirit of reflection and remembrance that I am excited to update you on one of our most significant projects at the Anthony Acevedo Educational Foundation.
We are actively preparing for the upcoming performances of "Undesirable Secrets," a monodrama that profoundly narrates the life of my father, Anthony Acevedo, as a WWII medic and Holocaust survivor. Currently, rehearsals are underway in Michigan, where we are diligently refining the performance to ensure it honors my father’s enduring legacy and the deep impact of his experiences. The one-person script, penned by Dr. Rodolfo Alvarado, who, it was recently announced, will be playing the lead role, captures the essence of my father's remarkable resilience and bravery. I am deeply moved by the commitment shown by everyone involved in bringing this powerful narrative to the stage.
As we approach 2025, a poignant year marking the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and my father’s liberation from Berga, our project takes on additional significance. This milestone anniversary is a fitting backdrop for "Undesirable Secrets," reminding us of the vast contributions Latinos made to the U.S. war effort, which remain largely unrecognized in the broader historical narratives.
Looking ahead, we have scheduled tryout performances in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this coming February. These events are crucial for fine-tuning our presentation before a major performance on March 14, 2025, at the Lubbock Civic Center in Lubbock, Texas—home to Rodolfo Alvarado. This performance, which will be part of the Viva Aztlan Dance Festival, is particularly special, providing an opportunity to engage with the community in meaningful dialogue about history, survival, and human dignity.
"Undesirable Secrets" is more than just a play; it is an educational tool that we believe will foster a deeper understanding of the Holocaust's impacts and the specific experiences of Latino soldiers. Through this monodrama, we aim to inspire reflection, discussion, and a greater appreciation of the sacrifices made by those like my father, who endured unimaginable hardships yet remained steadfast in their commitment to humanity.

Welcome to the inaugural post of the Anthony Acevedo Educational Foundation's blog. As President of the foundation, I am thrilled to use this platform to keep you informed and engaged with the many projects we are undertaking to honor and perpetuate the legacy of my father, Anthony Acevedo. Though I was unable to attend due to personal commitments, the recent workshop of the monodrama "Undesirable Secrets" in Santa Fe was a landmark event that I am eager to share with you.
Held at the Teatro Paraguas black box theatre, the workshop featured the immense talents of co-directors William Doll and Pete Kuzov, who also serves as co-producer alongside Robin Long. A highlight of the event was the first night’s performance by playwright Rodolfo Alvarado, whose dedication to bringing my father's story to life has been deeply moving. His portrayal was so impactful that discussions are now underway about casting him as Anthony Acevedo in the full production. This possibility adds an exciting dimension to the project, promising a portrayal filled with authenticity and depth. Significant progress was made on refining the script during the workshop. Key edits were implemented to strengthen the narrative, emphasizing the crucial theme of breaking silence when burdened by a secret— a theme that resonates deeply with the experiences and trials my father endured. Our heartfelt thanks go to Pete and his daughters for their generous hospitality, which greatly contributed to the success of the workshop. Their support was invaluable and made the event not only productive but also warm and welcoming. This blog will serve as a bridge to share these developments and more, as we continue to advance our mission to educate and inspire through my father's extraordinary history.
