The Team Behind Undesirable Secrets
Picture
Rodolfo Alvarado
Writer • Performer • Producer
Dr. Rodolfo Alvarado is an award-winning playwright, performer, author, historian, and an eclectic storyteller whose work moves across theatre, biography, poetry, film, podcasting, and historical nonfiction. At the heart of that work is a fascination with people and stories that might otherwise remain overlooked. His plays have been presented across the United States, featured at the American College Theatre Festival, and invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. His writing has received recognition in theatre, film, podcasting, and literature, including national book honors, screenplay awards, and the United Solo Award for Best Biographical Solo Show.

As an actor, Alvarado has performed leading roles including Che in Evita, along with appearances in The Indian Wants the Bronx, True West, The Woolgatherer, and God's Country. After years spent largely away from acting while writing, teaching, raising a family, and pursuing other creative work, Undesirable Secrets brought him back to the stage in the role of Anthony C. Acevedo.

That same curiosity about the lives people leave behind can be found throughout Alvarado's writing. He is the author of Brown Son of Lorca: A Boy Reclaimed in Poems, Stories & Voice, a memoir told through poems, stories, and performance pieces that debuted in New York City in 2025. His earlier biography of champion jockey Garrett Gomez grew from extensive interviews conducted with Gomez about his extraordinary career and complicated life.

Those conversations also led Alvarado somewhere unexpected once again. His forthcoming book, Garrett's Gift: Life Lessons from the Turn for Home, returns to Gomez's story through a very different lens. Drawing upon that remarkable archive of interviews, the book looks beyond racing to the lessons found in a life marked by extraordinary success, struggle, failure, perseverance, family, and second chances. Reflections from Garrett's family help make the book not simply another biography, but a deeply human exploration of what one life can leave behind for others.

The subjects may change, but that search for the human story is what connects Alvarado's work. Whether writing about a champion jockey, exploring his own life through poetry and performance, or stepping onto a stage to inhabit the memories of a World War II medic, he is drawn to the moments when an individual life opens a door into something much larger. That journey is at the heart of Undesirable Secrets.

Created in collaboration with the Acevedo family, Undesirable Secrets represents nearly a decade of Alvarado's historical research into the life of Anthony C. Acevedo. Following performances across the country and acclaimed New York engagements at Theatre for the New City and Theatre Row, where it received the United Solo Award for Best Biographical Solo Show, the production returns to New York for an extended Off-Broadway engagement at the Actors Temple Theatre in 2027.
